November 2025 - NJROTC 250 Mile Run
Early in October, NJROTC Instructor and Lieutenant Colonel USMC (Ret) and Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) Jon Sabado sent a notice to the GHS staff that Monday, October 13th, would mark the 250th birthday of the United States Navy. To commemorate this milestone, the NJROTC classes would run and walk laps on the Jack Mashin Stadium track throughout the day.
Jon’s message continued, “We invite all staff members and PE classes to join our cadets in an effort to collectively reach 250 miles in honor of the Navy. Come out, log some laps, and be part of the celebration!

Hi, Team Grossmont!
“This past Monday, 13 October, our Grossmont Team commemorated the birth of the United States Navy with a "N-250 Mile Challenge." Planned and coordinated by the cadets of the NJROTC program, the goal of the challenge was to complete a combined total of 250 miles on the track.
Team Grossmont as a community of cadets, students, faculty, coaches, and staff crushed the 250 mile challenge by completing just over 800 miles throughout the day.
Special thanks to all who supported this memorable event, especially the PE, Math, and Social Science departments who had the strongest showing.
We also recognized our very own, Cadet Charlie Williams, who ran an impressive 16 miles during school and English teacher Ms. Yvonne Vujovich-Payne (US Navy veteran) who ran with First Platoon to kick off the event.
Our cadet Public Affairs leaders captured the event in this motivational clip: https://youtube.com/@grossmontnjrotc?si=9TTTiwrTAQlI8Z7o

After the run, English teacher Yvonne Vujovich-Payne shared that, “It was an honor to run the first lap of the 250 mile celebration with Grossmont NJROTC cadets. I was impressed by student leadership, organization, and commitment to recognizing our country's surface fleet. It was truly an "All Hands on Deck" exercise, and I am grateful that I was able to experience it. Hooyah!”
Also, Caleb Ramirez, 1st Platoon Commander from NJROTC, reflected, “For me, being part of a 250 year tradition felt as one of the biggest accomplishments of my life, as I realized this tradition was not just about myself but about the history of many, dead and alive, representing something bigger than myself, the history of the United States Navy.”
